Each year, Hawtree Creek Middle School takes one week out of the year to celebrate the fantastic reading culture we have. Have a look below for some of the great events that took place from December 20 - December 23, 2021

This Year's Theme

Reading Around the World: How can reading expose me to new ideas and perspectives?

At HCMS we always talk about the joys of being a reader but reading also can make us better people. This year, COR Week 2021 is all about how seeing someone else's perspective.  All activities and events were grounded in this central theme.

Author Visit

We had two fantastic virtual author visits.  Maurice Belfonte, author of The Foreigner, spoke to 6th and 8th graders about moving to New York from Trinidad and Tobago and how his journey led him to a life and love of reading.

Resident author - 7th grader Mazon Washington and his mom Dr. Conry - spoke to us about neurodiversity as they read passages from their novella, Autastic!

Sudan Water Fund

All 7th Graders joined a representative from Water for South Sudan - the charity organization formed by the main character of their class novel, "A Long Walk to Water."
